Sports

The Sir Joseph Banks High School sports program caters to students who wish to compete at a highly competitive level all the way to those who wish to participate at a recreational level. The personal development, health and physical education (PDHPE) faculty and school ensure that all students receive the necessary support to reach their own personal goals.

Facilities

Our vast open spaces and excellent sporting facilities provide students with onsite opportunities to pursue their sporting interests. The basketball courts, cricket nets and oval are available for students’ recreational use at recess and lunch. Facilities include:

  • new basketball courts
  • tennis courts
  • volleyball courts
  • cricket nets
  • movement centre
  • football field
  • oval
  • huge hall.

Grade sport

Our grade sport program involves our students competing against other schools at various venues in the zone. This year, we have 13 grade sport teams competing over a 15-week competition where the best teams face off against each other in finals to decide an overall winner. Sports such as basketball, volleyball and soccer are competed weekly and the school usually performs well in the zone, qualifying for and on some occasions winning grand finals.

Knockout sport

Knockout sport involves our students competing against other schools either at our home ground or theirs. If the school wins, we continue to the next game; if we lose, then we are out of the competition, hence the term ‘knockout sport’.  Sports such as rugby league, touch football, netball and even table tennis are included in this competition.

Recreational sport

Recreational sport is non-competitive and involves our students traveling to venues to participate in activities such as ice skating and gym.

School sport

School sport is another choice offered at our school. It involves students participating in competitive and non-competitive sports, played at the school and supervised by the teachers in our school.

Carnivals

The PDHPE department also organises three carnivals every year - Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics. If the students perform well, they can represent the school at the Zone, Regional and even the State level. This is another great opportunity for those students who wish to pursue their strengths or passions and compete against students from other schools.

Whichever choice our students make with regards to their sport, the emphasis is always on participation and doing one’s best. Physical activity is an important component of a student’s life and Sir Joseph Banks High School offers all students the opportunity to participate in the activity that they enjoy the most.
