Guided inquiry design process

Real world and authentic learning experiences are delivered through inquiry-based learning using the guided inquiry design process (GIDP). Students in Years 7 and 8 are explicitly taught the GIDP by the teacher librarian.

Guided inquiry is an innovative team approach to teaching and learning where teachers and school librarians, with other experts and specialists, join together to design and implement inquiry learning. It engages students in constructing personal knowledge while using a wide range of sources of information and creatively sharing their learning with their fellow students in an inquiry community. Guided inquiry design guides students in deep engaging learning. It typically has 7 stages:

  • initiation: initiating a research project
  • selection: selecting a topic
  • exploration: exploring for focus
  • formulation: formulating a focus
  • collection: collecting information on focus
  • presentation: preparing to present
  • assessment: assessing the process.
