Bader crowned Yearly Chess Competition champion

Hugo and Bader shaking hands before their Grand Final match.

After an exciting and bustling 3-day Round-Robin tournament with 16 contestants battling it out on the chess playing fields, the finalists climbed their way through the ranks to get to the semi-finals on Day 4 and the Grand Final match on Day 5. Both Hugo from Year 9 and Bader from Year 12 were undefeated the entire tournament, out-smarting their opponents with clinical moves and advanced strategy. The final match was an intense showdown with clever moves matching clever moves, both players vying for any strategic advantage. Ultimately, Bader’s veteran experience gave him the decisive edge in the match, as he made some well-planned and pivotal moves to take advantage of Hugo’s lapse in defence.

The match ended with Bader being declared the winner of the SJBHS Annual Chess Tournament for 2022. Hugo finished as Runner Up, an excellent result for the young player. Third place went to Michael after a closely fought consolation final to determine third and fourth place. Thank you to Mr Endicott for being the Arbiter for the Grand Final match.

A special thank you to Mrs Kotajima and Mrs Tran for organising and coordinating the entire tournament. Also a special mention goes to Mr Viegas who was in the Learning Hub every day of the competition, playing with and training the players in exhibition matches, as well as arbitrating multiple games throughout the tournament.

Thank you to all the players who participated and we look forward to seeing everyone competing at next year’s tournament.
