We can make a difference!

We can make a difference!

Monday 29 July marked the day we made a difference. Florence and I had the opportunity to visit NSW Parliament House and participated in a program called ‘Make a Difference’. We were all seated in the theatrette where we were introduced to the incredible guest speaker Lilon Bandler.

Lilon Bandler is an Associate Professor and Senior Research Fellow for the leaders in Indigenous Medical Education (LIME). She has developed, integrated and implemented Indigenous health curriculum as well as provide support to Indigenous medical students. Dr Bandler explained how she couldn’t believe where she is today – standing at the front teaching students when she didn’t pay attention in class as a student herself. Her teachers told her she could ‘do better’ – and she did! Dr Bandler mentioned how much of a privilege it is to be part of the Royal Flying Doctors Service, where she visits her patients.

Dr Bandler spoke about a topic that is relevant to today’s world – bullying, which could have devastating effects on young people. Her also mentioned her role model and mother, Faith Bandler who played an important role in advancing the rights of Indigenous people.

Once Dr Bandler concluded her amazing presentation, we were divided into small groups where we introduced ourselves to other students representing their schools. We reflected on Dr Bandler’s presentation then chose topics we could make a difference and take action on. Topics included climate change, racism, freedom of speech and medical funds. Florence and I were given the chance to discuss these topics in detail with students from across the state. As young people, we had great ideas about these challenging topics we felt strongly about.

We walked away from this opportunity feeling inspired to make a difference in this world.
