White Ribbon Day assembly

Our alumni student David Miller, who performed alongside his father Noah and BYDS Youth Coordinator Craig Taunton communicated the spirit of White Ribbon Day with a fantastic musical performance.

After the performance, BYDS Director Tim Carrol spoke about the importance of White Ribbon Day and the continuing campaign by BYDS to help educate the community and raise awareness of this important initiative. BYDS have run many workshops with local primary schools, educating young children about the importance of treating women with equal respect in all aspects of life and encouraging others to prevent violence against women.

Our Year 11 Drama class performed their play “Happy Father’s Day”, which was devised for White Ribbon Day. The focus this year is Empowering Fathers. The piece explores the importance of fathers and father figures in providing positive role models for young people with the aim of eliminating violence against women. 

The play uses strong imagery to portray through movement and music, the violence that is perpetrated on women and tries to provide hope through monologues encouraging fathers, father figures and future fathers to stand up, speak out and act to prevent men’s violence against women.

The Year 11 drama class consists of powerful, talented and brave performers who are willing to take risks to produce challenging and sophisticated plays.

The White Ribbon tug-o-war trophy and championship medallions were presented to our tug-o-war team who were the champions of the zone event.

Finally, our school had the opportunity to pledge the oath of White Ribbon Day together, unified in this honourable goal. At our school we swear to never commit, excuse or remain silent about violence against women.
